The Funniest

Sometime I think, as Christians, we shoot ourselves in the feet (maybe foot? Where are you Grammar Girl???) by being so offend-able and difficult and just plain not-funny.  Well, not Douglas Wilson.  This guy is the new Chesterton.  I just like him so much.  Besides battling earnestly, yet joyfully with the late Christopher Hitchens, he takes the time to co-create super funny videos like the one below.

It will make you think twice about the gift of thumbs.

New home

We drove this very sweet little guy out to the Constance Creek Wildlife Refuge yesterday, near carp.  Super cool place.  We found him hanging from the eaves looking pretty weak and very lethargic.  We dropper fed him some water.  It was adorable.

Cole wanted to keep him.
Jason wanted to keep him and train him to sit on his shoulder and eat mosquitoes while he chopped wood.

This is little "Batty"drinking formula for a sponge.

Resting Babies

Esther was a sweet and joyful little mommy today and helped me tidy a good friend's house in preparation for a wedding.  She also did a lot of baby holding and some flower arranging.
I thank God for this little girl.  She is a sturdy and loving little girl.

Alexis the Doula

My sister just finished her formal DONA training and is now a legit labour support doula.  She recently delivered this little bundle.  Praise God. Alexis has done home births, birthing centre deliveries, cesarean-section support deliveries and hospital births.  She is quite the super hero.

I can't think of anyone more calm, gentle and loving than this little sister of mine.

Bring on the babies!!!  Alexis the Doula

Time on our hands...

There has been a resurgence of drawing around here..... Cole and Essy made a trip to the pond and these were the results of a few hours or drawing.

Gabe was busy working at Welsh Hill Farm today, clearing some bush and pulling saplings.  I don't know what that means but after 8 hours of it, he was pretty tired.  Cole will draw a picture of him sweaty and dirty later....

Nature Journal Entry by Cole.
I need ot note that if I had made this part of a school day, the idea of a nature journal with latin naming of insects would have been met with absolute defiance!  Somehow when it's Cole's idea, it's effortless....

Heading to the Bradens!

Now that things are wrapping up around here... summer plans are starting.  We are heading to Canada's Wonderland with the Braden clan and the kids are super psyched!

Normally our visits with the Bradens are filled with events and activities we don't normally get to do, but a few weeks ago Grandma Braden stayed for a long while and just came along side the kids during their school day.  She helped with math and came to the kids' recital.

It was wonderful to have her here to help me raise these kids.

Schools out for Summer!!!

We are done.  Or at least we are stopping formal lessons....

After reading a really great book recommended by a good friend, Make It Stick, I have negotiated a summer game plan:

Summer piano and theory goals, Gabe in particular has two RCM exams to prepare for.
A guided reading list including one narrative math text, Life of Fred, for Gabe and Cole.  This list included any remaining school reading (Gabe has to finish one more science module)
Cole and Essy have computer programs goals: Reading Eggs and Rosetta Stone French for Essy and Keyboarding without Tears for Cole.

It went over pretty well..... The chocolate bribe helped.

Today and tomorrow are fully free days.  No lists, no piano, no nothing!!  We all needed a break to celebrate the change of pace.

Whew.  Done.

Band - 2017

Thank you to Mrs Shew for another amazing year of homeschool band.

We are so blessed.

Sombre days

We've had a fox take three of our chickens this week.  He is a sly and very determined little beast.  Suddenly Fantastic Mr. Fox, by Dahl, is not as entertaining.  The two hens were a sad loss, but on the Lord's Day, we buried Dash, Cole's prize rooster and it was very sad indeed.

I am convicted that even if good, earnest, learned men, like Professor Scott, can persuade us to hope that "Death is nothing at all" our souls do not believe it.  Standing over the trench of a small and silly little grave, for a loved animal, it becomes nonsense to euphemize death.

Death is un-natural.  It was not intended.  We do know it, we just hate it.

Creation hates it, too.

God hates it even more.

Romans 8: 19-21
For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.

Revelations 21:5

And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.

IEEE - 2017 and the winner is....

This year at the IEEE Team Steampunk took home the Gold in the in the Di Vinci Drawing Contest and 3rd place in the Sumo Contest.  It was EPIC!!!  There were over 400 students participating from all over Ottawa.  The Mayor was there!!!  (tricky seeing as we jsut wrote him a complain letter about the flag fiasco....)

These victories were huge achievements - they represented hours and hours of work and perseverance and later bedtimes and missed recreation. I am ridiculously proud and so thankful for these smart, kind, dedicated boys.

And to the Steampunk Supervisor - You are the best dad we could ask for.   I hope these boys are half the man you are.

God bless you - Kath
